Honest Prepper Gear Reviews You Can Trust

By Jake Harrow | Updated December 2025

I’m Jake Harrow — Army veteran, dad of three, and the guy who actually uses the gear I review.

We live at 2,100 ft in the Ozark Mountains of northwest Arkansas. In the last eight years we’ve been through 9-day floods, multi-week grid-down ice storms, and tornado warnings that hit two counties over. When the power’s out and the kids are counting on you, there’s no room for YouTube hype or sponsored fluff.

That’s why every review on PrepperGearLab.com follows the same rule I learned the hard way overseas and at home:

If my family wouldn’t stake our lives on it, it doesn’t make the list.

How I Review Gear (No BS)

  1. I buy it myself — no freebies, no sponsor pressure.

  2. I test it in real Ozark conditions — humidity, ice storms, flash floods, pitch-black nights.

  3. I use it with my wife and kids — if a 9-year-old can’t find the tourniquet in the dark, it fails.

  4. I tell you the bad with the good — every kit has flaws. I call them out.

  5. I update every year — “2025” becomes “2026” with new tests and prices.

What “Trustworthy” Actually Means Here

  • Prices are live Amazon links (my affiliate tag preppergearla-20 — yes, I earn a commission, but it never changes my ranking).

  • If a product goes out of stock or the price jumps $150 overnight, I update the article the same day.

  • If a better kit comes along, it jumps to #1 — even if the old #1 paid more.

Current Roundups (All Ozark-Tested)

  • Best Survival First Aid Kits for Preppers 2025 — MyMedic Recon PRO still #1 after three winters

  • Best Emergency Food Kits That Actually Taste Good 2025 — coming next week

  • Best Solar Generators Under $1000 2025 — 4Patriots and EcoFlow battle incoming

Why Most Prepper Reviews Can’t Be Trusted

  • “Sponsored” tags buried in fine print

  • Gear tested in a backyard for 20 minutes, not a 9-day blackout

  • Affiliate links that disappear when the commission drops

  • Fear porn titles designed to panic-buy, not inform

I spent 20 years learning what works when the stakes are real. Now I’m handing it to you — no hype, no gatekeeping, no $2,000 “bug-out Rolls-Royce” you’ll never afford.

Start with the gear that actually matters. Click any roundup above, read the real tests, and grab what fits your family.

Because when the lights go out, the only review that matters is the one your family lives through.
